First, let me say this – if the holiday eating went a little (or a lot) overboard, move on. Leave it where it belongs – in 2018. You don’t have time to focus on the past. Focus on the present.
Now for the New Year Resolutions – don’t make them. If you made them, put them on the back burner for a minute. Not only are resolutions a setup for failure, but they put the pressure on you to make it happen and this is where we can fall short. For example, resolutions usually go like this:
- I will work out five times a week
- I will not eat chocolate/ice cream/cake/cookies/potato chips for a month OR until my birthday, OR for all of 2019 (really?)
- I will give up all snack foods!
Have you guessed the common theme here? Resolutions usually start with ‘I’ because the assumption is that you alone can make it happen. If it were just a matter of relying on one’s own willpower to make it happen:
- your pants would fit
- your cholesterol, blood glucose or blood pressure would be normal
- you could walk up those flight of stairs with little effort
If you want to be successful with your weight loss and health goals, you have to take an entirely different approach: instead of just relying on your mind (your willpower, the ‘I’) to make the changes in your body, incorporate the Spirit.
Permanent weight loss and optimal health must involve your total being: Spirit, Mind and Body. Why do you need all three? Because your mind dictates what you will do with and to your body. And you probably know from past experience that your mind can be pretty unreliable, if not self-sabotaging.
However, when you incorporate the Spirit, then you can control the mind which helps you manage the body. This is because the Spirit, God, has the power to help you control your mind and your body. God will give you the mindset, motivation, strength, perseverance, emotional serenity and balance you need to take on any physical health goals you have – and achieve them. He can help you manage temptation, emotional eating and other self-destructive, self-sabotaging behaviors you’re challenged with.
