Fall is almost here, which means that we’re all back to work and school and in the full swing of our busy lives. As our calendars fill up with activities and our to-do list grows longer, exercise can seem like less of a priority. These tips will help you to incorporate exercise more easily (and consistently) into your daily life.
Make fitness enjoyable
Have a regular exercise plan in place and find something that you enjoy doing. If you hate going to the gym, the reality is you will not keep up with it. A lifestyle change is something that you incorporate into your everyday routine for a lifetime. Find an activity that you enjoy doing and make it fun, not a chore.
Keep your fitness plan fresh and alive. If you like dancing, maybe start by turning the music on and dancing in your living room for 20 minutes every day. Next, consider investing in a new fitness DVD such as Zumba or Ballet. If you find yourself getting bored with the DVD, then consider taking a dance or aerobic class. Sign up for a six week ballroom dancing class. Take an adult ballet or hip hop class. The point is to keep it interesting so you are more likely to stick with it. Take a look at this list for your next exercise inspiration.
Recruit a friend
It is easy to cancel on yourself but harder to cancel on a friend. Having a buddy to exercise with is a great motivator and will hold you accountable. Make sure to find someone who will keep you motivated and positive.
Make your health a priority
The problem with exercising is many people find it difficult to fit it into their busy schedule. Make exercise a priority and something you can’t live without. Try fitting in a morning workout, which will start your day off right and keep you inspired throughout the day. You may be less tempted to go for that donut in the break room when you started your day off with a healthy intention. And no matter what time is most convenient for you to exercise, try scheduling your workouts like an appointment that you absolutely cannot miss, that way you won’t!
Get back on track
We all have times when we get off track and feel discouraged. Instead of saying “I will start tomorrow”, say “I will start right now!” Waiting until tomorrow will make it harder to get back on track. You are more likely to stick with it when you don’t put things off for a later date.
Listen to your body
Be mindful of your body. If you have an injury or are feeling run down, maybe take a day to restore. Try doing a yoga video for relaxation. Or tend to an injury that you have been ignoring. If we do not listen to our body when it needs attention, small problems can turn into bigger ones. Listen to what your body is craving and needing in the moment.
I hope these tips will renew your committment to get out there and get moving every day! Stay blessed!
